Smoke Detectors
Operable smoke detectors inside all sleeping areas
Replace smoke detector batteries every 6 months
Replace smoke detectors every 10 years
Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Should be located on each level of the home
Replace carbon monoxide detectors every 7 years
Fire Extinguishers
Easily accessible
Charged and ready to operate
P.A.S.S. - Pull, Aim at the base, Squeeze, Sweep
Escape Plan
Ensure doors and windows are operable
Have two ways out of all rooms
Create and practice an escape plan
Have a designated meeting place outside the home
Electrical and Appliance Safety
Operable GFCI's in bathroom and kitchen areas
Electrical cords don't run under rugs
Electrical cords are not frayed or cracked
All appliances are plugged directly into wall outlets
Clothes dryer lint filter and venting system are clean
Address Posting
Numeric address is posted on exterior of residence facing road
Minimum size of 3" numbers
Heating Safety
Flammable objects are at least 3 feet from heating sources (fireplaces, heaters)
Fireplace and barbecue ashes area places outdoors in a covered metal container at least 3 feet from anything that can burn
Space heaters are not plugged into extension cords
Heaters should have a "Tip Over Shut-Off" function
Chimney and Furnaces are cleaned and inspected annually
Cooking Safety
Cooking area is free from items that can catch fire
Kitchen stove is clean and vented outside
Cooking food is not left unattended
Candle Safety
Candles are in sturdy fire-proof containers that won't be tipped over
All candles are extinguisher before going to bed or leaving the room
Children and pets are never left unattended with candles
Smoking Safety
Family members who smoke cigarettes should smoke outside
Matches and lighters are secured out of children's sight
Ashtrays are secure and away from items that can catch fire
Ashtrays are emptied into a container that can not catch fire
